HOST SUPERVISOR (VANCOUVER)

First United Church is an inner-city ministry of the United Church of Canada, located in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, serving the needs of that community. First United seeks to model an inclusive community in which all are welcome. We are open 24 hours a day / seven days a week, 365 days a year. Currently we are seeking an exceptional "Host Supervisor" to add to our dedicated management team.
• The Host Supervisor position is an exceptionally busy, challenging and exciting role for an individual with exceptional skills, enthusiasm and energy working in a 24 x 7 operation and reporting directly to the Director of Operations.
• You will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of a large, multi-shift team of host personnel with added support provided by a Scheduling & Administrative Assistant. You will help to ensure procedures and policies are followed and add context for the team according to the mission and values of the First United Church.
• You will help to apply host accountabilities and tasks based on established policies and procedures and help to establish and confirm boundaries for any required decision-making
• You will be accountable to help develop, motivate and encourage this team's development with the particular focus in the areas of training, performance, skill development, implementation and follow through on the above procedures and policy and help to ensure focus on community member care and safety plans where appropriate
• You will oversee all weekly schedules, reports and associated administrative and statistical requirements.
• You will work specifically to mentor and develop individual behaviors relating to relationship building and professional conduct and expectations and mediate specific personnel concerns
• You will ensure measurable, quantitative training and development plans that accelerate the performance of this team and individuals are in place
• You will ensure adherement to effective controls and measures
• You will work with the Director of Operations and Community Manager to bring to their attention any specific concerns relating to individual and team issues
• You will use your strong relationship skills to foster and build a progressive and cohesive team approach that works effectively and seamlessly across the organization, including building relationships across the management team.
To qualify for this position, you will have:
• 5 plus years of "hands-on" large team management experience with some experience in the non-profit sector (shelter and/or emergency service non-profit organization) with measured success indicators
• Proven strong leadership and effective working relationship / building skills
• Demonstrated superior decision-making and organizational skills
• Ability to discern relevant information, apply critical thinking and facilitate the resolution of challenging situations using diplomacy, tact, and persuasion
• Exceptional communication skills required (written and verbal) and the ability and experience of dealing with and de-escalating conflict in the work environment is essential
• Demonstrated a strong community member focused philosophy in all interactions
• Strong knowledge and expertise in coaching, facilitation, listening, group and team skills
• Demonstrated a high level of initiative, self direction, flexibility and ability to adapt to, lead and manage change/changing situations
• Performance management experience a pre-requisite, in particular experience with guiding staff experiencing performance / behavioural problems
• Flexibility to work various shifts, including some nights, weekends and holidays is essential as required
• Post secondary education; degree or diploma in a relevant field highly desirable
