Position Summary:
The Project Accountant acts as a support for Project Managers, assisting in the efficient execution of complex and diverse projects while ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial information. This role is the primary link between operations, project management and finance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop, analyze, interpret and provide internal distribution of the full scope of Project Accounting activities and identify the direct impact on financial information in order to appraise operating results in terms of profitability and performance;
• Solid understanding of Revenue Recognition techniques;
• Skilled in cost and revenue accruals and/or deferrals;
• Provide guidance to the Project Management team to ensure compliance to GAAP and CSOX., assuring controls are being followed;
• Provide project status and analysis information to Project Manager and Controller;
• Ability to take initiative and work independently on process controls and improvements;
• Main point of contact between Finance and Project Management in regards to all aspects of related project specific budgets, variance analysis, forecast, trends, commitments, actual cost, cost / profitability analysis and reporting;
• Document and prepare month end accruals;
• Understanding of the difference between job cost and capital costs;
• Understanding of the flow of purchase orders/committed cost from Requisition to Received not Vouchered status (within an ERP system) and the impact on job costing;
• Excellent documentation skills and strong analytical skills;
• Attend and participate in monthly project review meetings;
• Professional communication skills with both internal and external clients.
Qualifications / Competencies required:
• Post-secondary Education -- formal education in accounting (business diploma or university graduate) or enrolment in a professional program preferred (CGA, CMA, CA)
• At least 3 years related experience -- Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, job costing
• Experience in a project accounting or construction environment preferred
• Strong computer skills and ability to effectively utilize software such as ERP / Project Costing Solutions, Microsoft Office.
• Effective communication skills at all organizational levels
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to develop, nurture and maintain strong relationships with vendors, agencies and various internal stakeholders
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Highly organized and motivated
• Ability to work independently and demonstrated leadership skills
